Brazil is where Nick Warren gets dangerous

Prague was raw. Brazil sounds like he knows exactly what he can get away with now. Global Underground 008 does not hand you a neat hour of progressive house followed by a neat hour of trance. It keeps pushing sideways: breaks, dark progressive records, big melodic moments and techier material all inside the same two-disc argument.

The original 1998 Boxed release runs for roughly two and a half hours across 13 tracks on each disc. Unusually for the City Series, the title represents a whole country, although the mix was inspired by Warren playing in São Paulo. None of that would matter if the programming was weak. It is not.

CD1 starts restrained and slowly widens

PMT — Marching Powder is a perfect opener because it is more about movement than melody. Desert — Lose It (To the Sound) flashes past, DJ Gogo — Sequenza pulls the disc deeper, and E-Razor — India starts letting more colour in without giving away the whole game.

Capricorn — All I Am in the Yum Yum mix is one of the first places the album really opens, then PMT returns with Tequila Flange. That repeat matters. Warren is not treating GU008 as a showcase where every artist gets one slot. He is building a sound.

Yin Yunk — Rise & Fall, Stone Factory — New Sunset and Locust — No One in the World gradually expand the emotional range. Origin — Tidle Protaxis then gets almost nine minutes because Warren trusts the record. By Junk Project — Miralaca and Conscious — Northern Lights, the melodic side has fully pushed through.

V.F.R. — Tranceillusion in the Taucher mix closes CD1 with exactly the amount of trance it needs. After more than an hour of darker movement, the scale feels like a destination rather than a genre switch.

CD2 starts weird. Good.

Slacker — Psychout (Thing) opens the second disc and immediately kicks a hole in the side of the mix. Madagascar — You’re Beautiful in the JCB remix keeps the broken rhythm moving, then Hybrid — Kill City and The Forth — Reality Detached make the first twenty minutes feel completely different from the end of CD1.

Voices of Kwahn A.D. — Ya Yae Ya Yo Yo Yo in The Light remix takes that strange beginning towards more progressive-trance territory, while Nickelson — Aquaphonic works as a short colour change before one of the most famous records on the entire release appears.

Café del Mar is track seven — and Warren still refuses to stop there

Energy 52 — Café del Mar ’98 in the Nalin & Kane mix sits right in the middle of CD2. Warren does not treat it like a finale or some sacred museum piece. It arrives, blooms and then he carries on.

Tekara feat. Lucy Cotter — Breathe in You changes the emotion instead of trying to out-anthem it. Anthony & Georgio — Equilibrium and Pink Bomb — Indica pull the mix back down. Serpico — Dreamscape opens the space again before Propulsion — Pressure tightens everything for the finish.

POB — Boiler closes the album without turning sentimental. That is a better ending for GU008 than an obvious euphoric farewell because the release has never been about purity. Breaks, house, progressive trance, dark grooves and big melodies all get a turn.

Warren’s pacing is the real star

The tracklist is excellent, but the pacing is what makes Brazil memorable. Warren knows when to make something bigger and, more importantly, when not to. The forgotten records are the reason to come back: Sequenza, New Sunset, Tidle Protaxis, Northern Lights, Equilibrium, Indica and Boiler.

That is what old DJ mixes preserve. The huge classics never really disappear. The records around them do. GU008 puts those less-famous pieces back in their proper context and suddenly the whole era gets wider again.

Brazil makes the Warren GU run addictive

Put Brazil after Prague and the development is obvious. Prague is looser and rougher. Brazil is more composed and controlled without losing the curiosity. That is a musical reason to want both releases, not completionism.

This is also where Warren’s Global Underground identity starts becoming obvious: he likes melody, but he is happiest when he can spend ages making you wait for it. Dark. Open. Dark again. Breaks. Trance. Pressure. Release. GU008 turns that into a method.
