My 9.

Nine albums or nine tunes at a time. All the picks stay free, with proper links back to the music. Four complete collections: the original Progressive Albums nine, plus classic trance albums, trance singles and progressive singles.

First editions: October 2026. These are curated starting selections, not a claim to be everybody's definitive nine. The trance and progressive tune posters use genuine release sleeve artwork, with each of the nine selections linked underneath for listening and further research.

My 9 Progressive Albums

Renaissance, Northern Exposure and Global Underground — nine albums from the shelves that helped shape the progressive sound.

From Renaissance to Global Underground

The nine sleeves aren't all the same kind of progressive house. Start with Renaissance in 1994, then listen to the quiet opening of Northern Exposure's North disc, and compare how differently Sasha and Digweed approached their Global Underground CDs in 1998. It's the space between the records that makes the story interesting.

My 9 Trance Albums

From Gatecrasher and Tiësto to Anjunabeats. Different years and different approaches; don't judge the whole series by one famous tune.

The journey from Magik to Gatecrasher

A 1999 Gatecrasher compilation and a live Tiësto mix from Amsterdam in 2000 aren't interchangeable 'trance classics'. One was made as a club-branded double-CD package; the other documents a live mixing idea. Listen for how the openings, melodies and peak-time tracks are arranged, then follow the Anjunabeats CDs into the early 2000s.

For Supporters: a disc-by-disc listening route through Gatecrasher, Magik, Sunrise and Anjunabeats. The research looks at mixing, period detail and the exact versions—rather than simply praising all nine albums.

My 9 Trance Tunes

Nine records and remixes from that classic trance era. Check the exact version, not just the title you remember.

Same title, different memory

Some tracks became famous through a particular remix rather than the first original pressing. Superstring in Rank 1's remix and Silence in Tiësto's In Search of Sunrise remix are the clearest examples in these nine. If you remember hearing a record on a particular CD, the mix name is worth checking before deciding you've found it again.

From the huge payoff to the long groove

Heaven Scent, Breeder's The Chain and Medway's Resurrection are not interchangeable 'progressive anthems'. Heaven Scent prepares a major melodic release; The Chain creates pressure by staying with a groove. Listen to both, then trace them back into the Sasha mix-CDs that gave the records space to work.

Supporters get the longer comparison: exactly which mixes matter, what these records do inside DJ sets, and which other late-90s 12-inches take the idea further.

Nine picks are plenty. Not a paywall after number three.

Every cover that's available, every name and every pick stays free. The longer articles, listening journeys and collector notes give Supporters something extra to follow.
