Nigel Dawson: Renaissance, The Cross and the Darker Resident Sound

Nigel Dawson was a Renaissance resident who also spent around ten years at The Cross in London. In a 2021 interview he talked about learning to mix in the early 80s, a warm-up before Sasha at Venue 44 that went a bit too well, and his first paid booking: six hours for £20. His disc two of Renaissance Presents… Volume One is the darker half of that 1998 album. Dawson's recorded output is less familiar than that of the DJs who appeared on the front of every magazine, which makes the early Renaissance and London residency links particularly interesting. This isn't about pretending every resident was a superstar. It's about the people whose long sets and careful warm-ups helped make the room work before the headliner arrived.
