The Classic Chart

Ten classic progressive house and trance mixes I'd put in front of you before anything else on the site. If you're coming back to this era after fifteen years away, this is the shortcut. Not the biggest sellers, not a public vote, definitely not an algorithm — just the mixes that have earned the spot, reshuffled when something genuinely knocks one out.

  1. 1

    Renaissance: The Mix Collection (CD1)

    Sasha & John Digweed · 1994

    • Progressive House
    • Progressive

Proof a mix CD could be a proper body of work, not just a souvenir of a night out.

  2. 2

Essential Mix — The Goa Mix

    Paul Oakenfold · 18 December 1994

    • Trance
    • Progressive Trance

Radio built like a film score. Still nothing else quite touches it.

  3. 3

    Northern Exposure (CD1 — North)

    Sasha & John Digweed · 1996

    • Progressive House
    • Progressive Trance

Proof progressive house could be cold, patient and properly strange and still work brilliantly.

  4. 4

    Essential Mix

    Sasha · 15 January 1994

    • Progressive House
    • Progressive

The set that laid down the blueprint for British progressive house on the radio.

  5. 5

Global Underground 009: San Francisco (CD1)

    Sasha · 1998

    • Progressive House
    • Progressive Trance
    • Progressive

Dark and fluid, growing more trance-shaped as it runs: Sasha stretching progressive house without losing the patience underneath it.

  6. 6

    Communicate (CD1)

    Sasha & John Digweed · 2000

    • Progressive House
    • Progressive

Sasha & Digweed ditching the widescreen mood for something darker, tighter and built for the club.

  7. 7

Essential Mix — Live at Homelands

    Paul Oakenfold · 30 May 1999

    • Trance
    • Progressive Trance

Oakenfold at peak 1999 trance: Orkidea, Grace, Binary Finary and Gouryella inside a live set that still builds with progressive patience.

  8. 8

    Northern Exposure 2 (CD1)

    Sasha & John Digweed · 1997

    • Progressive House
    • Progressive Trance

The moment progressive house and the trance boom collided head-on.

  9. 9

    Renaissance Presents… Volume One

    Ian Ossia & Nigel Dawson · 14 June 1998

    • Progressive House
    • Progressive Trance
    • Trance

Not the famous Sasha and Digweed monument. Two resident DJs taking the same club instinct into a darker, trance-facing pair of 1998 discs.

  10. 10

    Mutations (2001)

    Ian Ossia · 2001

    • Progressive House
    • Progressive

An hour of 2001 progressive from one of Renaissance's least mythologised residents — and Ossia's own surviving time capsule.
