Steve Lawler: Dark Drums, Long Residencies and the Low-Slung End of Progressive

Steve Lawler's route into this story is unusual: no Renaissance apprenticeship, no Radio 1 anointing, no famous mix CD that made him a name overnight. He built a sound out of residencies, long repeated nights in the same rooms, and it came out darker, more tribal and much less interested in melody than most of his peers. His darker, more percussive sound grew out of actual rooms and repeated nights, not just the records that later became collector favourites. That is the useful distinction between a residency and a one-off compilation appearance. The VIVa and Harlem Nights associations arrived in different parts of the story, but the way he built pressure is the consistent thread.
