Evolution — Phoenix (Guy J Remix)
Evolution's Phoenix is part of the classic progressive house vocabulary, but this particular recording is much newer. Guy J uploaded his remix on 31 December 2016, describing the original as a record that had changed his life. Hearing the newer interpretation beside the older track is a lovely way to trace what stuck around as the scene changed: patience, atmosphere and the willingness to let a groove develop. It's not a newly unearthed 90s version, and pretending that it is would miss half the appeal. This is two different generations of progressive house in conversation.

A deliberate return
Guy J shared his remix of Evolution's Phoenix on 31 December 2016. In the accompanying message, he described Phoenix as one of the records that had changed his life. It wasn't a claim that he had made the original, and it wasn't an old 90s white label suddenly resurfacing: this was explicitly a new interpretation.
That distinction makes the record more interesting. Phoenix is part of the earlier progressive-house language, with slow development and atmosphere. Guy J's version takes that starting point and makes it work with a different production sensibility and a different period's dancefloors.
Original or remix?
Both versions invite the same question: how much does a track need to change before it feels like a new record? The remix keeps enough of Phoenix's character to make the connection obvious, but it has its own timing and weight.
TMA's Classic Tracks history also includes Evolution's original Phoenix, so this is a good example of why keeping mix names and version dates next to a track matters. There's no reason to make a choice between the two when listening to them side by side tells a better story.
