Danny Rampling: Shoom, Ibiza and Fifteen Years on the Radio

Danny Rampling is permanently attached to one summer and one club, which flattens a long career. He was already DJing in London before Shoom, he was still on national radio fifteen years later, and his Essential Mixes from 1993 to 1996 show the house music progressive grew out of. The early Essential Mix broadcasts make a useful corrective to histories that jump straight from acid house to fully formed progressive trance. Vocals, club house, percussion and left-field choices all belong in the picture. The Ibiza recording from 1996 adds another perspective: a working DJ responding to a live night, not a genre timeline assembled years later.
