Essential Mix — The Goa Mix

Paul Oakenfold · 18 December 1994

Don't skip about looking for the famous bits. Oakenfold's 1994 Goa Mix is two hours of Goa trance, house, Blade Runner, Dracula and Dead Can Dance that only makes sense once you let it unfold, and Radio 1 listeners voted it the best Essential Mix ever. The famous 1994 broadcast moves between psychedelic dance records and music you wouldn't expect to hear in a straightforward club compilation. Film-score references and atmospheric passages are part of its identity, not interruptions. It's best approached as one complete radio journey. Knowing a handful of the tracks is helpful; hearing how Oakenfold connects them is the real reason it has lasted.
