Essential Mix — Live at Homelands

Recorded live at Homelands in Winchester and broadcast on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix on 30 May 1999, this set catches Paul Oakenfold deep into his late-1990s trance period.

It opens with the spacious, progressive lift of Orkidea’s “Unity” and Jon Vesta’s “Gull” before moving through the darker drive of Grace and Origin. As the set develops, the emphasis becomes increasingly trance-led, with Binary Finary, Gouryella and Man With No Name pushing the energy higher without losing the long-form pacing that distinguished Oakenfold’s strongest radio and festival sets.

Compared with the Goa Mix, this is less eclectic and more direct. By 1999, Oakenfold had moved firmly towards the sound that would dominate large trance rooms around the turn of the millennium, but the sequencing still relies on patience, gradual escalation and carefully timed melodic release rather than constant peaks.

It is a strong document of Oakenfold at the point where progressive trance and large-scale festival trance were beginning to overlap.
