Go back before the mythology set in. Episode 13 of the Essential Mix, January 1994, catches Sasha with house still front and centre, his own Higher Ground in the mix, and Leftfield, Jam & Spoon and even Tomita all in the same two hours. The timing makes this broadcast special. Radio 1's Essential Mix was still young, and Sasha's selections show how comfortably house, progressive ideas and more adventurous sounds could share a night before the genres hardened into categories. Hearing Higher Ground beside Leftfield, Jam & Spoon and Tomita makes far more sense in sequence than it does as a disconnected list of famous names.
