CD1 gets most of the mythology because its ambient opening makes the big statement. CD2 — South — has the less glamorous job: take that atmosphere and turn it back into movement.
That is exactly why it belongs beside the North disc rather than being treated as the spare half of Northern Exposure. The second disc is where the project proves the opening was not just an elaborate intro. The space, tension and patience carry over, but the centre of gravity shifts towards progressive house and trance.
The clever bit is that it never feels like somebody has flicked a switch marked CLUB. The transition is gradual. Rhythms become firmer, the records push harder, and the widescreen mood survives underneath them.
Listen to the two discs in order and South makes more sense. North creates the weather; South finally gives it somewhere to go.
That two-part shape is the reason Northern Exposure still works as an album rather than just a famous collection of records. It asks for time, then actually rewards it.
If you normally reach for CD1 because that is the one everyone talks about, carry on. The second half is where the journey lands.
Recommended if you like: Play it immediately after the North disc, then move to Northern Exposure 2 to hear the same partnership tighten the idea a year later.
