Nick Warren

You probably owned a Nick Warren mix at some point without quite registering the name. He's one of those DJs who gets slightly short-changed by the way dance music history is usually told, with none of the mythology machine around Sasha or Oakenfold. What he had instead was Bristol, Massive Attack, Cream, Way Out West and eight Global Underground albums, all built on the same refusal to rush. Start with the distance between his 1995 and 1999 Essential Mixes, then put one of the Global Underground discs alongside them. The programming changes, but the patience is still there. It's a better account of Warren's appeal than treating him as somebody who happened to share a record collection with Sasha and Digweed.
