Ian Ossia's first disc of Renaissance Presents… Volume One shows another side of the club in 1998. Follow the opening and then move to Nigel Dawson's second disc: two residents, two different routes across the house/progressive/trance border. Both CDs have public archive listening paths.

GU006 Sydney is the Digweed CD I'd put on when someone asks why those early Global Underground mixes still matter. The first disc doesn't throw everything at you. It builds through deep, percussive house until the more melodic moments have somewhere to land. That contrast is the magic. Put it on from the start, then compare what the same year sounded like in Sasha's San Francisco.

Nick Warren's 3 October 1999 BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix shows what a long-form radio programme can do that a compilation CD sometimes can't. Follow the movement from steadier progressive records towards a more melodic close, then compare it with his other late-90s work in TMA's archive.

Pappa opens Global Underground's Nubreed line with the patient, darker end of turn-of-the-century progressive house. It's a great record to hear after an early GU city album: the same long-mix discipline, a different selector, and more room for grooves that don't immediately announce a festival peak.

The Arches broadcast is a cracking reminder that 1995 club music wasn't neatly divided into genres. Pete Tong and Sasha come at the night from different angles, and that's what makes the recording worth hearing all the way through. Mutations runs for just over an hour and comes from Ossia himself on Mixcloud. Put it beside his Renaissance Presents… Volume One disc to hear what changes when a resident can choose a different context and format.

Holden's Horizons sits in the crossover between progressive house and trance. Compare the original with the Way Out West remix, then hear that remix in the context of Dave Seaman's GU016 Cape Town: it's a better route into its character than ranking it solely by breakdown size.

The Timo Maas remix of Dooms Night escaped the usual boundaries between progressive, breaks and UK garage around 2000. It is the obvious record to put alongside the new Timo Maas DJ profile: a proper piece of club history, and one that makes the crossover between these scenes a lot easier to hear.

Medway's 1998 Hooj Choons release was used by Sasha in GU009 San Francisco. Listen to the full arrangement first, then hear the mix-CD sequence; its real effect comes from the context rather than a single obvious breakdown.

Don't expect Northern Exposure's widescreen mood here. Communicate finds Sasha & Digweed in 2000 gone darker and tighter, playing the same records as everyone else at the top of progressive house, and making them hit harder.

Ask a Digweed obsessive which Bedrock record sums up the sound and quite a few will say this one over "Heaven Scent". It's darker and deeper, and it doesn't lean on an obvious hook to get you through. Groove and atmosphere do all the work, and that controlled, patient development is what Bedrock built its reputation on. Sasha & Digweed played it twice on Communicate in 2000, in two different mixes.
