Global Underground: When a Mix CD Felt Like a Passport

If a silver Global Underground sleeve still gives you a little jolt of nostalgia, you're not imagining it. GU didn't invent the DJ mix or the superstar DJ. What it did was package the DJ, the city, the photography and two good hours of music into something that felt bigger than a compilation. This is how two lads from Newcastle turned bootleg tapes into one of progressive house's defining mix-CD series, and why some of it still deserves the mythology once you strip the shine off. The actual city mattered to the presentation, even when the record selection wasn't a documentary of its local scene. Sleeve photography, artwork, travel stories and a trusted DJ combined to make a compilation feel like an event. Sydney, Buenos Aires and San Francisco are places on the covers, but the lasting attraction is still how the two discs unfold.
