Put a progressive mix from 1996 next to one from 2003 and you'll hear it straight away: something happened. The drums got tougher, the rooms felt colder, the technology moved on, the superclub machine started wobbling, and the genre splintered into breaks, tribal, techier and more minimal directions. Progressive house didn't die in 2001, whatever the old heads mutter into their pints. It just stopped agreeing where the centre was. Here's how that actually unfolded. The early-2000s turn wasn't one dramatic collapse. Listen to a 1999 Global Underground disc, then a tougher 2003 radio set and you'll hear different priorities: drums, production techniques, crossover pressure and club programming. Some of the older approach survived, while other strands became breakbeat, tribal or techier sounds with lives of their own.
